CFDA/Vgue Fashion Fund on Ovation Week 1

Image

So last night was episode 1 of “The Fashion Fund” a documentary about the CFDA Fashion Fund. We had the chance to see an inside look. The committee and former entries into the process informed us of how it felt to be apart of the process and also why the mentor/scholarship program exists. It was probably one of my favorite shows of the night. Its was laid out over an hour(which was my only moment to pull back because I feel due to all the commercials it could have been 30 minutes). We saw different types of portfolios, the table debate, where each judge talked about there favorites and they attempted to choose 10 finalist. Below is the list of the Class of 2013:

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, Public School

Jason Jones and Mike Feldman, Parabellum

Juan Carlos Obando, Juan Carlos Obando

Marc Alary, Marc Alary

Misha Nonoo, Nonoo

Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin, TOME

Shimon Ovadia and Ariel Ovadia, Ovadia & Sons

Tim Coppens, Tim Coppens

Todd Snyder, Todd Snyder

Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard, Veronica Beard

The designers of Veronica Beard are sisters in law. Public School worked for Sean John for a time. Ovadia & Sons are twins from Brooklyn. These are just a small hint at things that you will see. I can’t wait to see the studio visits, the 10 day test, and the 15 minute timer timed presentation directly to the committee. Can’t wait to see the process. Below I’ve placed the names of the committee, who goes from Anna Wintour and Jenna Lyons to the newly appointed designers of Rag and Bone.

Ken Downing, Senior VP/ Fashion Director, NEIMAN MARCUS

David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, Managing Partners, RAG & BONE

Mark Holgate, Fashion News Director, VOGUE

Jeffrey Kalinsky, President, JEFFREY and Executive Vice President, NORDSTROM

Steven Kolb, CEO, CFDA

Reed Krakoff, President, Executive Creative Director, COACH

Jenna Lyons, Executive Creative Director, J.CREW

Andrew Rosen, President and Founder, THEORY

Diane von Furstenberg, President, CFDA

Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief, VOGUE

“Buckle Down”- next week is Presentation day. 15 minutes to present your line, your ideal, and your aesthetic. Literally theres you, your models, the committee, and a timer that will ding and stop you. You also have to talk your business. Its a true test. Watch next week on Ovation on Wednesday at 10pm. See you there!

5 Designers to Keep an Eye Out For

Image

5. Brady Lange- With this list, I am planning on lining up designers who have struck my curiosity. Some you may know, some you may not, and some you may want to know. Its easy to assume that everyone in fashion are some of the big names. Not everyone is such. Some of the best lines are those that sneak up on you and make everyone ask “where’d you get that”. When asked those questions the pride wells up because you have the “in”.

Here I wanna profile designer Brady Lange. Like most I saw him on the commercials and information for the new Lifetime show Under the Gunn hosted by,of course, Tim Gunn(brought to us by the producers of Project Runway) . Immediately I liked his style and thought “wow whose the cute guy? But better then that, i love his clothes”. I immediately researched and became a huge fan. His website is very put together. It includes lookbooks, shopping, blog, and an about me section. He also has a Facebook page. I immediately wanted to profile him and saw him as the type of designer I wanna see making it globally.

Brady was born in Montana and attended to Art Institute of Portland, which he graduated from in 2008. He interned with Adam Arnold learning tailoring.  From what i see, he is in the process of designing for his Spring/Summer 2014 Collection. He has a great sense in design as far as using patterns. Throughout the clothes you can see an urban influence and thought to bringing a more grounded appeal to high end. I wouldn’t say that there is a similar deisgner to him, that’s why I wanted to profile him. I feel he’s one of the designers in a class thats taking what they learned and stepping out on a ledge to focus on what they truly want to do. He has three collection look books on his website. I can see that he will go far. Keep an out because I will and will be posting more to see what 2014 will bring him. Check out Brady’s first episode of Under the Gunn posted below and various links to interviews and information about Brady Lange.

‘The Following’: Sam Underwood on THAT season premiere twist

If you had the chance to catch the premier of The Following, then you probably caught the grand twist. We are excited about the future. Where’s Joe Carroll? What’s up with Ryan? How is “Fanboy” Mike doing? Things are going to get good and glad the show has returned. Check out EW’s interview with Sam Underwood aka The Murderous Twins.

10 Signs You’re a #Menswear Nerd

So perusing through my morning websites and I come across a small link for an article. Of course it’s one of those silly countdowns where you click through and see each slide for what it is. Most times I click, see things I like, and giggle a little(yes i did say giggle). Now the reason why this one made me stop, is that it IS an abundance of things that I myself do. I mean who doesn’t get sticker shock when they see how much cheese has gone up to? Am I the only one who is amazed that chips ahoys have gone up or I can’t get Pop Tarts for 2 dollars?(yes it sounds insane) Yet I will fork over 100 dollars for jeans. Yeah I’m that guy! This countdown may have been tailored(horrible pun I know) for me. Complex Magazine’s style section is probably in my top ten sites and today they truly hit it on the nose(or maybe I should say nicely made Italian leather belt).

Fashion Alert!! FiveFour

I won’t say that this is on my list of Ones to Watch. What I will say is that it has me curious. The clothing company FiveFour is a company that states that if you subscribe for 60 dollars a month you can get twice that or more in clothes. Now it seems to be true. I’ve looked all over the internet, seen videos, and seen the celebs wearing it. Currently they have Eric Decker from the Super Bowl participating Denver Broncos (whoop whoop, rooting for you buddy). They also have a host of celebs from Denzel Washington to Mark Wahlberg who enjoy their clothes. My big question is since you don’t really know what your getting, how does the whole process work? How do they determine everything? As i look through their site and Facebook page, I honestly like what I see. I’m putting this as a fashion alert  because honestly i see a deal. Who can pass up 60 dollars for 2 to 3 items or more of clothes? I couldn’t trust me. I’ll let you guys know how it goes. If you join up,let me know. It sounds like an outstanding deal that even if you don’t exactly get what you want, still sounds good. I mean its Christmas and your birthday each month.

The Future: Top 10 Anime Predictions of 2014

Space Dandy- OK, so I know the top spot is a day late (stop there cause I ain’t going that far). But i thought you at least need to be 3 episodes in. I loved the premier, which in itself was history making. This show has everything that we need to kick the year off right. Since it started so strong lets hope it continues that way. The reason it was history making, is that the show kicked off simultaneously world wide at the same time in English and Japanese. This has never happened before. The show debuted Saturday January 4th, 2014 at 11:30pm in the US on Adult Swim’s Toonami. The show is brought to us in the US by Funimation. The show is produced by Bones, the same studio that brought us Darker than Black, Soul Eaterm and countless others.. Now the series had major hype coming into it mainly because the creators created shows like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Fullmetal Alchemist. The director of the series is famed anime director Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop fame.

So that tells you about the creation of the series, how about we tell you ABOUT the series. The show follows the main character of Dandy. Dandy is a space explorer looking to make fame or rich finding unknown species in space (we never really know cause things get out of hand on a regular). Dandy does have a partner, QT. QT is a robot partner that at the beginning of the series has been traveling with for some time. There’s a huge amount of fan service and meta commentary in this show. From QT saying his operating system is a few releases behind to the teleporter literally taking a full commercial break to be used(it was a full 5 minute running gang). The first episode throws us for a huge loop but that loop makes the show worth it. I will say many people are making comparisons to Cowboy Bebop, which I think are slightly unfairThe series is hilarious and Dandy is slightly moronic, but very cool. I’ve posted the first 2 episodes here and as of the posting of this article episode 3 should be on Funimation’s website soon. Check it out and let me know exactly what you think. This joins my Ones to Watch List. Is it on yours?

The Future: Top 10 Anime Predictions of 2014

d-fragments

D-Fragments or D-Frag- So finally we get to the runner up position. I chose today to mark the top 2 for certain reasons, each one being a different reason. This anime because I think today on Selfie Sunday a laugh is needed. This anime is hilarious. When I watch anime I normally watch my favorites last. I line them all up and decide in which order do I like them and the ones that I enjoy beginning to end are the last to watch (in case I need a pick me up after some bad anime). This is one of the few comedies I treat that way. Its about a delinquent who transfers into a new school. He brings with him his two best friends since childhood. First thing that was funny, his gang is called Kazama’s Party (that’s not the funny part), the funny part is everyone knows his best friends and all the trouble they’ve caused in detail but can’t place him, Kenji Kazama, the leader. Most delinquents in anime at least can be placed by reputation, not him. While getting an idea about him we meet the “Game Creation Club”, who are having a dilemma about adding an other member or the club is over. Yup, I’m sure you can see where this is headed. Hilarity ensues with the club dragging him in and every meta moment you can think of. These girls actually pull down the shades in a room and say I’m a “dark type”. I literally burst out laughing. I’ve posted the first episode here. ts something you have to see. With a class president whose as bad as he is, a club who pretty much manipulate the situations, and a best friend who is apart of his gang and is Vice President of the school yet we don’t know why he took the job. I find this show one of my Ones to Watch. Check out episode one. Its simulcast each Monday on Funimation’s website
